The short version
Compare Cat Foods is a hobby project run by one person. I don’t sell ads, I don’t ask you to create an account, and I don’t send newsletters. The only measurement on the site is an anonymous, cookieless visit counter (described below) — it tells me how many people visited and which pages they read, never who anyone is. That said, your visit still passes through services that keep their own logs (the hosting provider, the CDN, the database the site reads product info from), and clicking an affiliate link to a retailer hands you off to that retailer’s own tracking. The details are below.
What this site collects from you directly
Nothing that identifies you. There is no advertising script, no signup form, no comment section, and no “create an account” page. You can browse the site without typing anything in.
The one measurement the site runs is Cloudflare Web Analytics, a privacy-focused visit counter. It sets no cookies, stores nothing on your device, doesn’t build a profile of you, and doesn’t follow you to other websites. What I see is aggregate only — how many visits the site got, which pages are popular, which sites sent visitors, and roughly which countries visits came from. I never see a “this person looked at this page” record, and neither I nor Cloudflare can use it to recognize you when you come back.
The site does store one small piece of information in your browser’s session storage: the filters you have applied. This lets the “← All foods” link on a product page take you back to the same filtered list you came from. Session storage lives inside your browser, never gets sent to the site or to any third party, and is wiped when you close the tab.
What the services running the site may see
Even though I don’t collect anything myself, your request still passes through the services that host and serve the site:
- Netlify hosts the website. They see standard server-request information (IP address, browser type, which page you requested).
- Cloudflare sits in front of Netlify as a CDN and bot-protection layer. Same kind of request information. Cloudflare also operates the anonymous visit counter described above.
- Supabase is the database the site reads product info from. Each page load fetches data from them; they see the request but not anything personally identifying beyond what’s in the request itself.
Each of these services has its own privacy policy and may keep logs for security and operations. I do not receive individual-visitor reports from them — I never see a “this IP looked at this page” record.
Affiliate links and retailer tracking
Some of the retailer buttons are affiliate links — the Amazon and Chewy ones. When you click an affiliate link, the retailer’s site loads (it’s their website, not mine), and they may set cookies and run their own tracking to figure out whether your eventual purchase came from this site. That tracking is how I earn a small commission if you buy. Right now Amazon and Chewy are the retailers shown — I don’t yet link out to others like Petco, so there’s nothing else here tracking you or earning anything. If that program accepts the site, I’ll add it and update this page.
A few things worth knowing:
- The retailer’s privacy policy governs what happens once you’ve clicked through. I have no control over what they collect.
- The affiliate link itself carries a tag identifying this site as the referrer. That tag is sent to the retailer, not to me. I do not see who clicked, only an aggregate count of clicks and earned commissions inside the affiliate program’s own dashboard.
- If you’d rather not be tracked by a retailer, you can copy the product name into the retailer’s own search and skip the affiliate hop. The comparison data on this site is the same either way.
If you email me
If you write to contact [at] comparecatfoods [dot] com, I’ll have your email address and the contents of your message sitting in an inbox. I’ll use it to reply to you. I won’t add you to any mailing list (I don’t have one), I won’t share it with anyone, and I won’t use it for anything beyond answering your question.
Children’s privacy
This site is not directed at children under 13, and I don’t knowingly collect information from anyone of any age (see above — I’m not collecting anything from anyone). If you believe a child has somehow ended up identifiable in this site’s data, email me and I’ll sort it out.
California, EU, and other privacy rights
Various privacy laws (CCPA in California, GDPR in the EU, and others) give you rights to know what a website holds about you, to request a copy, and to ask for it to be deleted. Since I don’t collect personal information from visitors, this is straightforward: there’s nothing about you for me to surface, and nothing about you for me to delete.
If you’ve emailed me and want me to delete that email from my inbox, ask me and I will.
Changes to this policy
If I add anything material later (for example, a different measurement tool or an email list), I’ll update this page and bump the “Last updated” date at the top. I won’t quietly start collecting data without saying so here.
